The Gen X Guide to Creating a F*CK IT List: Take Control, Ditch the BS, and Live Life on Your Terms

We’ve spent our lives being responsible—showing up for work, taking care of family, doing what’s expected. But somewhere along the way, we forgot that our time is just as valuable as everyone else’s.

Enter: The F*CK IT List—the anti-bucket list. Instead of focusing on things you want to do before you die, this is about things you’re done doing so you can actually start living.

This isn’t about being reckless—it’s about setting boundaries, choosing you, and cutting out the crap that no longer serves you. Ready to take back control? Let’s do this.

Step 1: Identify What’s Draining You

First things first—what are you doing out of obligation, fear, or habit that you absolutely hate?

Toxic relationships? Nope.

Over-committing? Done with that.

Pretending to enjoy things you don’t? Bye.

Your mission: Make a list of things that drain you, stress you out, or hold you back. No filter. Write it all down.

Step 2: Give Yourself Permission to Say NO

Gen X has major people-pleaser energy. We were raised by latchkey independence and 80s sitcom logic that made us believe we had to just suck it up. Newsflash: You don’t.

It’s time to reclaim your NO.

F*CK IT to:

  • Attending events just to be polite

  • Staying in friendships out of guilt

  • Over-apologizing for things that aren’t your fault

  • Keeping things that clutter your life (physical & emotional)

If it doesn’t bring you joy, fulfillment, or peace, it’s a hell no.

Step 3: Swap “Should” for “Want”

How many things do you do because you feel like you should?

🗑 Toss the "shoulds":

  • “I should lose weight before I wear that.” (Wear the damn thing.)

  • “I should keep this job because it’s stable.” (If you hate it, start planning your exit.)

  • “I should be nicer to that relative even though they treat me like crap.” (Nope. Boundaries exist for a reason.)

Replace “I should” with “I want” or “I don’t want”—and watch how different your life feels.

Step 4: Add Things You’re Choosing Instead

Your F*CK IT List isn’t just about quitting—it’s about replacing old habits with ones that actually make you happy.

Replace:

❌ Draining social events → ✅ Quality time with people who matter

❌ Hustling 24/7 → ✅ Actually enjoying life

❌ Hiding your personality → ✅ Being unapologetically yourself

Make a list of things you’re saying YES to now and ditching the things that weigh you down.

Step 5: Burn the List (or Frame It Like a Manifesto)

Now for the fun part—what do you do with this glorious declaration of freedom?

  • Option 1: Burn it (safely). It’s symbolic. Watch the toxic BS go up in smoke.

  • Option 2: Frame it. Stick it on your fridge. Make it your phone wallpaper.

  • Option 3: Write a journal entry about why these things no longer have power over you.

Whatever you do, make it real—because this is your turning point.

Final Thoughts: Welcome to the No-BS Era of Your Life

Gen X, we’ve put up with a lot. It’s time to take back our time, energy, and happiness.

So, what’s going on your F*CK IT List? What’s the first thing you’re done with?
