We the Fractured - A not-so-traditional 4th of July poem

We the People,
in wanting to form a more perfect union,
are currently yelling at each other
in comment threads
and gas station parking lots.
We hold these truths to be self-evident:
That all people are NOT treated equally.
That liberty seems reserved for those with
the right bank balance, skin tone, or party line.
We the People, ARE TIRED.
We are tired of leaders who serve themselves.
Tired of rights being rationed.
Tired of headlines and bait designed to divide us -
so we never look up long enough
to see who’s cashing in on the chaos.
But still -
we remember.
We remember that this country was born
from a united front through disagreement and change -
not blind obedience.
We remember that
standing for what is right
is not the opposite of patriotism -
it is its origin story.
But standing up isn’t an excuse
to hate, to harm, or to silence.
It’s meant to build, not break.
To challenge injustice, not create more of it.
To bring light - not more fire.
We the People are more than our politics.
We are mix-tapes and found family.
We are backyards and borrowed dreams.
We are tired, yes - but we are not done.
We are:
Men and women
Daughters and sons
Friends and lovers
We are human.
And we are Gen X.
We can do better.
We still believe in a more perfect union.
We still believe in the
“United” States of America.
And we still believe in each other -
even if we’ve forgotten how to say it out loud.
Save it. Share it. Sit with it.
We’re not giving up.
