Gen X and Anxiety: How to Deal, Overcome, and Realizing it's OK to Ask for Help

Remember when we were kids, and the only “anxiety” we had was whether we’d get home in time to watch our favorite show or waiting until after 9:00 to call your favorite friend who lived outside your area code? Fast forward to now, and suddenly, everything feels overwhelming—jobs, relationships, health, the economy, social media, existence in general.
And yet, as Gen Xers, we were raised with the “just deal with it” mindset. Anxiety? Stress? Burnout? You push through. You suck it up. You don’t talk about it.
But here’s the thing—that’s total BS. Anxiety is real. It’s exhausting. It's lonely. And guess what? It’s okay to admit that you need help. So let’s talk about anxiety, why Gen X struggles with it so much, and—most importantly—how to deal with it without losing your mind (because, let’s be real, we’re all hanging on by a thread).
Why Gen X Has So Much Anxiety (Even If We Don't Admit It)
We were the last generation of latchkey kids, raised on after-school specials and told to fend for ourselves while our parents worked. Emotional support? Therapy? Feelings? Nope. We had sarcasm, dark humor, and a good mixtape to get us through.
Now, we’re juggling aging parents, adult kids (or teenagers who think we’re embarrassing), job stress, financial uncertainty, and bodies that betray us more every year. And let’s not even start on the pressure of "figuring life out" when we still feel 25 inside but definitely aren’t.
And the hardest part? Somewhere along the way, we lost ourselves. We became parents, partners, employees, caregivers… but who are we outside of those roles? Anxiety often sneaks in when we feel disconnected from ourselves. If you’ve ever thought, Who even am I anymore?, you’re not alone.
Signs You Might Be Dealing With Anxiety (Besides Just Feeling Stressed AF)
Anxiety doesn’t always look like a full-blown panic attack. Sometimes, it’s quieter but just as destructive. Here are some signs:
You can’t seem to relax, even when things are fine
Your mind races at night, thinking of everything you forgot to do
You have trouble focusing (Wait, what was I doing again?)
You get irritable over small things (Why is that guy chewing so loudly?!)
You’re constantly tired (but also wired?)
Your body aches for no reason (hello, tension headaches and clenched jaw)
You feel guilty for taking a break (because productivity = worth, right?)
You feel lost, like you’re going through the motions but have no idea what actually makes you happy anymore
Sound familiar? Yeah, you’re not alone.
How to Deal with Anxiety (Without Losing Your Sanity)
Okay, we’ve established that anxiety is real, and we’ve been pretending we don’t have it. Now, let’s talk about actually doing something about it.
1. Stop Pretending You're Fine
First step? Admit it. You don’t have to be a superhero. It’s okay to say, “Hey, I’m struggling.” You wouldn’t ignore a broken arm, so why ignore mental health?
2. Get Out of Your Head (Literally)
Move your body. Exercise isn’t just for looking good in your favorite old concert T-shirt—it actually helps regulate stress. Walking, yoga, lifting weights, even dancing around your kitchen to old-school tunes—it all helps.
3. Limit the Doomscrolling
Social media is like anxiety fuel. The news? Even worse. Take breaks. Set limits. You don’t need to know every terrible thing happening in the world 24/7.
4. Sleep Like Your Sanity Depends on It (Because It Does)
Remember when we could stay up all night and still function? Yeah, those days are over. Bad sleep = worse anxiety. Start treating sleep like it’s sacred. Wind down, avoid screens, and for the love of Gen X, stop drinking caffeine at 8 PM.
5. Find a Hobby That Doesn't Involve Work or Doomscrolling
When’s the last time you did something just for fun? Playing an instrument, painting, building Legos, collecting retro junk—find something that lets your brain unplug.
6. Breathe, Dude.
Sounds too simple, right? But deep breathing actually calms your nervous system. Try this: Breathe in for four seconds, hold for four, exhale for four. Do it a few times. It works.
7. Reconnect With Yourself
One of the biggest sources of anxiety for Gen X? Feeling like we’ve lost our sense of identity. We spent so many years being what everyone else needed us to be that we forgot what we actually want out of life.

8. Let Go of the "Tough It Out" Mentality
You don’t have to suffer in silence. Therapy isn’t just for “other people.” Medication isn’t failure. Talking about your struggles doesn’t make you weak—it makes you self-aware.
Overcoming Anxiety: What Actually Works
So, how do you move past just dealing with anxiety and actually overcome it?
Set Boundaries – You don’t have to say yes to everything. Protect your time, your energy, and your peace.
Prioritize What Actually Matters – Not everything is urgent. Not everything is worth stressing over. Let go of the nonsense.
Change the Way You Talk to Yourself – You’d never talk to a friend the way you talk to yourself. Show yourself some damn compassion.
Find Your People – Whether it’s friends, an online community, or a therapist, having people to talk to makes all the difference.
Ask for Help When You Need It – No, seriously. You don’t get a medal for struggling alone. Whether it’s professional help or just venting to a friend, reaching out is strength—not weakness.
Final Thoughts: You Deserve to Feel Better
Anxiety isn’t just part of life that you have to suffer through. You can feel better. You deserve to feel better. And if you’re struggling? You’re not alone - not even close.
So, let’s rewrite the Gen X script. Let’s stop pretending we’ve got it all figured out and start taking care of ourselves. Because survival is great and all… but thriving? That’s the real goal.
