Finding Myself in Boston: A Solo Trip, a Show, and a Beautiful Evening

Aging sucks. Let’s just put that out there. But sometimes, taking a chance and stepping outside our comfort zone is exactly what we need. Our identities shift over time—not quite in that superhero way (though that would be cool), but in subtle and unexpected ways. If you’ve spent years being "Mom" or "Dad," once your kids grow up, you start questioning who you are beyond that role. For me, that question became even bigger after a series of life-altering events—helping my son recover from two major surgeries, losing my mom, COVID, and stepping away from toxic relationships.
So, in the midst of rediscovering myself, I decided to do something just for me: a solo trip to Boston to see Ben Barnes. Yes, that Ben Barnes - Chronicles of Narnia, Shadow and Bone, The Punisher and many other great roles, including musician. Big fan here! So, when I heard he was coming to Boston - just a few hours away from me in Maine—I knew I had to go. Not only would I see his show, but I’d also get to meet him. It felt like the perfect little adventure, a chance to reclaim some joy and excitement just for myself.
The Solo Trip (and a Little Anxiety)
It’s been a long time since I traveled alone. The last time I went anywhere solo was for a book signing last year where I met Leigh Bardugo (the author of Shadow and Bone), and before that, it was a heartbreaking trip to Colorado to say goodbye to my mom. This trip, however, was all about fun.
As the date got closer, I felt a mix of excitement and nerves. Would I walk or take a taxi? How far would the venue be? What would I do the next day? Yes, these are the dilemmas I create in my mind. But then, I reminded myself—this was about doing something for me, no pressure, no expectations, no hospitals, just an experience to enjoy.
A Night of Music, Memories, and New Friends
It all started in line to get in where they made sure we were "on the list", then, it was time for the meet and greet. Meeting Ben Barnes was so surreal. He was kind, patient, and genuinely made every fan feel special. When it was my turn, I shared a deeply personal story with him—how my son and I started watching The Punisher together, only to have to put it on hold for a week when my son underwent his first surgery. That memory is etched into my life, a reminder of how fragile and strong we can be all at once. Ben listened, truly listened, and told me to give my son his best -that moment is one I’ll never forget.

From the moment the show started, I knew I had made the right choice. Ben Barnes put on an incredible performance, and the energy in the room was electric. But what made the night even more special was the people I met. I spent the entire night hanging out with a small group of fans who were just as wonderful as the experience itself. It reminded me of my younger years, when music and friendships were at the center of my world.
It was those moments that I realized how much I love getting out, meeting people, and experiencing new things. For the first time in a long time, I had space to just be me—to do what I wanted, when I wanted, without obligations or expectations.
Unexpected Memories and a Newfound Sense of Self
What surprised me most that night was how much it stirred up old memories. Watching Ben Barnes and his band on stage reminded me of the time when my life was filled with musicians—friends in bands, late-night shows, music videos, recording studios, and the sound of laughter during every conversation. It also brought back memories of a dear friend I lost to breast cancer when she was only 26. That California connection hit me in the heart, unexpected but powerful.

What’s Next? More Adventures, of Course
This trip wasn’t just about seeing Ben Barnes (though, let’s be real, that was a major highlight). It was about proving to myself that I can still chase joy, take chances, and create new experiences. And now? I’m already dreaming up my next solo adventure. Maybe a swordplay class (because why not?) or a trip back to Colorado to visit old friends.
Because at the end of the day, we are never too old to rediscover ourselves.
